New Model Army – Live SO36

Known for their unique blend of punk rock, post-punk, folk, alternative rock and all kinds of musical sub-cultures, New Model Army refuses to belong to any club or style. Formed in Bradford in 1980, the band’s line-up has changed over the years, with Justin Sullivan being the constant and central figure. They have released numerous albums and continue to tour and record music, maintaining a dedicated fanbase. Their last studio albums “From Here” (2019) and “Unbroken” (2024) both hit top positions in the UK and German Album Charts. The 2023 live album “Sinfonia” hit #1 in the UK and German Video-Charts, making it the highest charting album in the band’s history. THE PRODUCT Raw, unfiltered, and brimming with energy, “Live SO36” captures punk rock at its finest. The album can be seen as an indirect successor to their 2023 live release “Sinfonia”. Because when the idea of doing a New Model Army concert with a full orchestra at Berlin’s magnificent Tempodrom venue was first floated, the Band had a thought: that if they were going to do something so extravagant, they should also do the exact opposite on the same weekend. So, they booked the following two evenings at Berlin’s legendary Punk Rock sweatbox, the SO36 in Kreuzberg, and returned to being the simplest, stripped-down version of New Model Army they could be – without orchestra, keyboards or double drums. Over the two nights, the band performed 38 different songs (to add to the 21 performed with the orchestra), with the intention that the weekend should be seen as a whole. The Sinfonia project, in all its magnificence, was released in 2023 – now, at last, comes the sweaty, full-on rock and roll. “Live SO36” features New Model Army’s full electrifying performance of July 16th, 2022. 20 Songs, mixing both fan-favourites such as The Hunt, 1984 and Poison Street, and rarer songs, the band has never performed live before. It will be available as “2CD+DVD Digipak”, including the full show video, and “Black 2LP Gatefold”. The first print-run of both formats exclusively includes an audio download for the unreleased show 2, recorded one day later on July 17th, 2022.
